Microneedling, also known as Dermapen or micro-needling mesotherapy, has one main goal: to improve skin quality through controlled micro-injuries. This may sound alarming, but in practice it involves precise, very fine punctures that activate the skin's natural regeneration processes. The skin receives a signal: repair, rebuild, smooth. The result is a gradual improvement in texture, firmness, and tone – without altering facial features.
What Microneedling Involves
Dermapen is a device with pulsating micro-needles that creates hundreds of micro-punctures per second. The depth of treatment is adjusted to the area and the specific skin concern. The procedure stimulates skin renewal and remodelling, improves texture and density, and enhances the absorption of carefully selected preparations applied during the session. The key word is controlled – this is not scratching the skin, but a precise procedure tailored to the skin type and indications.
Who Benefits Most from Dermapen
Microneedling is a particularly strong choice for post-acne scarring, especially atrophic scars, enlarged pores and uneven skin texture, fine lines and early signs of ageing, laxity and loss of firmness, post-inflammatory pigmentation and uneven tone as part of a broader treatment plan, and rough, dull skin lacking smoothness and radiance. It is a quality-focused treatment that works best as a series.
What Results to Expect
After Dermapen, the goal is not a dramatic next-day effect but a change that becomes visible week by week. The skin feels smoother to the touch, pores appear smaller, tone becomes more even, post-acne scars may gradually soften, and the skin looks firmer and denser. For scarring and significant unevenness, time, a full series, and patience are required. This is a process, not a one-off result.
What Happens During the Treatment
Every appointment begins with a consultation and skin assessment – indications, contraindications, and a treatment plan. The skin is then cleansed and disinfected, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied for comfort, and the microneedling is performed at the appropriate depth using the correct technique. The session ends with the application of a soothing preparation and home care instructions. Some discomfort may be felt, particularly in sensitive areas, but topical anaesthesia typically handles this well.
What Is Normal After the Treatment
After Dermapen, redness similar to mild sunburn is most common, along with a sensation of warmth and tightness, sometimes mild swelling, and occasionally minor bruising. Some people experience light flaking a few days after the treatment – this depends on the intensity of the session and individual skin response.
Post-Treatment Care – Where Results Are Made or Lost
For the first 24 to 48 hours: gentle cleansing without rubbing, no acids, retinoids, or exfoliants, avoid saunas, swimming pools, hot baths, and intense exercise, do not touch the face with unwashed hands, and ideally skip make-up as advised by the clinic.
For the following days, the focus is on barrier regeneration. In post-treatment creams and serums, look for ceramides with lipids – cholesterol and fatty acids – panthenol, beta-glucan, and allantoin for soothing, and squalane and gentle emollients. Formulas should be fragrance-free and free of active ingredients that could irritate freshly treated skin. This is not the time to test new products.
SPF after Dermapen is non-negotiable – skin after the treatment is significantly more sensitive to UV radiation and far more susceptible to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
How Many Sessions Are Needed and How Often
Dermapen works best as a series because skin remodelling takes time. The intervals and number of sessions are determined individually – the skin needs time for regeneration between appointments. For post-acne scarring, the plan is usually longer than for a general refresh of tone and texture.
When Microneedling Is Postponed or Not Performed
The treatment is not performed in the presence of an active skin infection or herpes, fresh inflammatory or purulent acne lesions in the treatment area, broken skin integrity or significant irritation, recent sun exposure, highly reactive skin with a compromised barrier, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding – as a precaution. A safe treatment begins with a thorough assessment.
Dermapen Day by Day – What Is Normal and What to Avoid
Treatment day and the first night: the skin is red, warm, and may be slightly swollen. This is a normal inflammatory response that is part of the regeneration process. Apply only the recommended products, and sleep on a clean pillowcase.
Day two and three: redness typically subsides and the skin may feel slightly tight and dry. Moisturise with a gentle cream, avoid rubbing and unnecessary touching. If the clinic has permitted make-up, use only light mineral products.
Day four and five: light flaking may appear in some people. Do not assist the process with an exfoliant or pull at the skin. Allow the process to complete naturally.
Day six to ten: the skin should be calm. A gradual return to the normal skincare routine can begin, but with care – acids and retinoids are the last to return, once the skin is fully stable.
Throughout the entire period: SPF every morning, even when the sky is overcast.
What to absolutely avoid after Dermapen: no sunbathing, no sauna, no home exfoliants, no strong active ingredients, and no unnecessary touching of the face. A single mistake in post-treatment care can undo the results of an entire series.
