We most commonly associate skin ageing with age. And indeed — over time, skin naturally loses firmness, regenerates more slowly, and produces less collagen and elastin. However, there is a second type of ageing that very often has a greater impact on the appearance of the skin than the number of years lived. It is photoageing — premature skin ageing caused by UV radiation.

Simply put: skin does not age only because we are getting older. It also ages because for years it has been regularly exposed to the sun — often without adequate protection.

What is photoageing?

Photoageing is a set of changes in the skin that develop as a result of ultraviolet radiation. UVA and UVB rays are the most significant. UVB radiation acts primarily on the surface — it is responsible, among other things, for redness and sunburns. UVA radiation penetrates deeper, reaching the dermis, where collagen and elastin fibres are located — the ones responsible for firmness, elasticity, and smoothness of the skin.

UVA acts throughout the year, even on cloudy days, and penetrates through glass. This is why photoageing is not limited to holidays, the beach, or sunbathing. It is the result of daily, years-long exposure.

How does UV radiation affect the skin?

Under the influence of UV radiation, free radicals form in the skin — reactive molecules that damage cells and accelerate ageing processes. This leads to damage of collagen fibres, degradation of elastin, loss of skin firmness, uneven activity of melanocytes, the development of pigmentation, weakening of the hydrolipid barrier, and increased dryness and roughness of the skin. The skin gradually loses smoothness, becomes less elastic, thinner, more reactive, and less resistant to external factors.

Symptoms of skin photoageing

Photoageing does not appear overnight. It is a process that can go unnoticed for years, until at some point the skin begins to look "older" than one's age would suggest. The most common symptoms are sun-induced pigmentation, uneven skin tone, fine and deeper wrinkles, loss of firmness, roughness and thickening of the epidermis, visible capillaries, persistent redness, dehydration, and a dull, tired appearance. Changes are most visible on the face, neck, décolletage, and hands — the areas most frequently exposed.

Photoageing vs. natural ageing — what is the difference?

Chronological ageing, related to age, is a natural process affecting the entire body. Over time, skin becomes thinner, regenerates more slowly, and loses some of its elasticity. Photoageing, on the other hand, is a process accelerated by UV radiation — the changes are often more uneven, visible, and pronounced in areas exposed to the sun.

A good example is comparing the skin of the face or décolletage with the skin in areas that have been protected by clothing for most of one's life. The difference in skin quality very often illustrates just how significant the sun's impact is.

Is a tan a sign of healthy skin?

This is one of the most important myths. A tan is not a sign of health — it is a defensive reaction of the skin to UV radiation. Melanocytes produce more melanin to protect cells from further damage. Of course, the point is not to fear the sun. The point is to use it wisely and consciously. Skin needs protection, especially when we care about preventing ageing, pigmentation, and maintaining good skin quality for years to come.

SPF — the most important anti-ageing product

When we talk about photoageing, sun protection cannot be overlooked. Daily SPF is one of the most effective elements of slow age prevention. No expensive serum can replace it if the skin is exposed to UV radiation every day without protection.

In practice, it is worth remembering that SPF should be applied throughout the year — not only on holiday and not only when the sun is shining. It is particularly important when dealing with pigmentation, retinoids, acids, and after professional treatments. For people prone to pigmentation or melasma, or after cosmetological procedures, high protection — SPF 50 — is most often the best choice.

Antioxidants — support for skin exposed to UV

Sun protection is the foundation, but antioxidants also play a very important role. They help neutralise free radicals generated by UV radiation, oxidative stress, and environmental pollution. In the care of skin prone to photoageing, it is worth reaching for vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, resveratrol, coenzyme Q10, and niacinamide. A morning routine based on antioxidants and SPF works particularly well.

Retinoids and photoageing

Retinol and retinal are among the best-researched ingredients in skincare for signs of ageing. They support epidermal renewal, improve skin texture, and help address fine wrinkles, pigmentation, and uneven skin tone. In the context of photoageing they can be very beneficial, but only when introduced thoughtfully. Sun-damaged skin is often also dehydrated, sensitive, and with a weakened hydrolipid barrier — introducing retinoids too quickly can cause irritation. This is why we first focus on the barrier, SPF, and regeneration, and only then add stronger active ingredients.

Cosmetological treatments for photoageing

In a cosmetology clinic, it is possible to address the effects of photoageing on several levels: brightening, pigmentation, skin texture, firmness, and regeneration. Depending on the skin's condition, options include chemical peels, microneedling, mesotherapy, retinol treatments, antioxidant therapies, and treatments supporting skin remodelling and regeneration.

What matters most, however, is that treatments for photoageing are never chosen randomly. The skin must be properly assessed, and the plan should take into account the time of year, the degree of pigmentation, skin sensitivity, and daily SPF protection.

When is it worth consulting a dermatologist?

Photoageing is not only an aesthetic concern. UV radiation also increases the risk of precancerous lesions and skin cancers. Any moles that change shape or colour, grow rapidly, bleed, itch, or differ markedly from others should be assessed by a dermatologist. A cosmetologist can work on skin quality, but suspicious skin changes always require medical diagnosis.

Photoageing can be slowed down

Time cannot be stopped, but the rate of skin ageing can be significantly influenced. What matters most are daily, repeated decisions: sun protection, gentle skincare, antioxidants, appropriately chosen active ingredients, and thoughtful treatments. Photoageing is a process that accumulates over years, and so its improvement also requires time and consistency.

Photoageing is the premature ageing of skin caused by UV radiation — it manifests as pigmentation, loss of firmness, wrinkles, roughness, visible capillaries, and uneven skin tone. The most important preventive measure is daily SPF protection, supported by antioxidants, retinoids, a well-chosen home care routine, and cosmetological treatments. Conscious skincare is not about fighting age — it is about protecting the quality of the skin. That is the essence of the slow age approach.
