Laser hair removal is one of the most effective methods for long-term hair reduction, but the results depend heavily on what happens before you even step into the treatment room. A well-conducted series of laser sessions can significantly and durably reduce hair growth – provided the skin and hair are properly prepared and a few key rules are followed between appointments. This is a practical guide: straightforward, without unnecessary padding, focused on information that actually makes a difference.

How Laser Hair Removal Works and Why Results Build Over Time

The laser emits a beam of light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. The thermal energy travels down the hair shaft and damages the follicle – the structure from which the hair grows. The surrounding skin should remain as unaffected as possible, which is why careful calibration of treatment parameters to skin phototype, hair thickness, and hair colour matters so much.

One thing worth understanding from the start: hair grows in cycles, and not all hairs are in the active growth phase at the same time. Laser energy works most effectively on hairs in this active phase – which is exactly why a series of sessions is needed rather than a single treatment. Most people undergo six to eight sessions, sometimes more, depending on the body area, hair type, and hormonal factors.

Who Gets the Best Results from Laser Hair Removal

The highest effectiveness is achieved with dark (brown or black) and coarser hair – it contains more pigment to absorb the laser energy. Fair to medium skin tone has traditionally been the most straightforward combination for laser treatment. Modern devices can also work on darker skin phototypes, but this requires particular care and precise parameter adjustment.

Very light, red, and grey hair contains little pigment, which limits the effectiveness of the laser method. In these cases, realistic expectations are always discussed honestly during a consultation.

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal – What to Do and What to Avoid

For three to four weeks before the first session – and throughout the entire course of treatment – avoid any hair removal method that pulls the hair out from the root: waxing, epilating, tweezing, and threading. The laser needs the follicle intact as its target. Shaving with a razor is fine because it does not remove the root.

It is best to come to the appointment with a few days of regrowth – a few millimetres of visible hair allows for a proper assessment of its colour and thickness, which directly informs the parameter settings and realistic outcome predictions. Just before the treatment, the area is shaved in the clinic, precisely and safely.

Sun exposure is one of the most important safety considerations in laser hair removal. Tanned skin contains more melanin and absorbs laser energy more intensely – increasing the risk of irritation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. During the treatment course, avoid sun exposure, sunbeds, self-tanners, and bronzing lotions.

A few days before the appointment, avoid applying strong acids, retinoids, retinol, and chemical exfoliants to the treatment area. The skin should arrive calm, without fresh irritation from active ingredients.

If you take any medications or herbal supplements, mention them before the session. Some substances have photosensitising effects. On the day of the appointment, do not apply any lotions, oils, perfumes, deodorant (for underarm treatments), or make-up (for facial treatments) to the treatment area. Come with clean, dry skin.

What Happens During a Laser Session

Every appointment begins with a brief check-in: how the skin responded after the previous session, whether any new medications, sun exposure, or irritation appeared in the meantime. The area is then cleaned, assessed, and shaved directly before the laser is used.

During laser hair removal, you may feel warmth, light snapping sensations, and mild discomfort – this is a normal response. After the session, the skin may be slightly red or show minor swelling around the follicles. This is a temporary reaction that typically resolves within a few hours. Treatment time depends on the area – underarms take just a few minutes, while legs or an extended bikini area take considerably longer.

Post-Treatment Care

For 24 to 48 hours after the session – sometimes longer for sensitive skin – avoid hot baths, saunas, swimming pools, and intense physical exercise. Do not rub the skin with rough towels or apply exfoliants to the treated area.

Day to day, keep the skin moisturised with a gentle product and apply a high SPF sunscreen to any exposed treated areas. Sun exposure without protection is the most direct route to hyperpigmentation after laser treatment.

Important: hair does not disappear immediately after laser hair removal. Over the following one to three weeks, treated hairs gradually shed – this is the expected and normal process.

Common Mistakes That Undermine Results

Waxing or epilating between sessions removes the follicle the laser needs to target. Sun exposure and skipping sun protection increase the risk of complications. Irregular intervals between sessions and dragging out the course disrupt the work with the hair growth cycle. Shaving immediately before a session in a way that irritates the skin makes it harder to carry out the treatment safely. Withholding information about medications or supplements can lead to an unexpected skin reaction.

When It Is Better to Postpone a Session

In the case of fresh skin irritation, an active skin infection in the treatment area, a cold sore (for facial treatments), recent sun exposure, or the use of photosensitising substances – it is safer to reschedule. An appointment can always be moved. Avoiding complications is far more difficult.

Laser hair removal carried out thoroughly and tailored to the individual characteristics of the skin and hair is one of the most practical methods for long-term hair reduction. The difference between good results and average ones usually comes down to three things: solid preparation, a consistent treatment series, and precise calibration of parameters.
