Laser hair removal is one of the most effective methods of hair reduction, but there are areas that require a particularly considered approach — primarily those connected to hormonal activity: the face (chin, upper lip), the area around the nipples, the sternum, and the abdomen. Not because the laser works less effectively there, but because the mechanism behind hair growth in these areas is different from that of the legs or underarms.

Why These Areas Are Different

Hair growth in hormonal areas is largely dependent on the action of androgens. In some people, the hair follicles show greater sensitivity to these hormones — meaning that even at normal hormone levels, darker and coarser hair may appear. In most cases this is simply a genetic predisposition, not a symptom of illness.

Laser Hair Removal in Hormonal Areas — What It Looks Like in Practice

The process of hair reduction is always gradual — regardless of the body area. In my experience, hormonal areas do not require a greater number of sessions than other areas. What they do require is a considered approach and observation over time.

One important thing worth understanding from the outset: the hair that clients present with at the first appointment has often been there for many years. Laser hair removal can effectively remove it. Any hair that may appear in the future is most commonly individual new hairs — not a rapid return of the entire problem.

Top-Up Sessions — When They Are Needed

In the case of hormonal areas, top-up sessions may be needed. It is worth being clear, however: this is not because the same hairs are growing back, but because the body may over time activate new hair follicles — particularly if the hormonal situation is not fully stabilised.

In practice this means significantly less hair than before the course of treatment, individual hairs appearing over time, and easy management of the result with occasional visits. This is an entirely different level of comfort compared to the starting point.

When Hormonal Testing Is Worth Considering

In some cases, the pattern of hair growth may suggest a hormonal background. I refer some clients for a consultation with an endocrinologist — particularly when hair has appeared suddenly or is noticeably increasing, is very dense, or is accompanied by other symptoms.

It is worth saying something important here: excessive hair growth is not always caused by a hormonal disorder. We often hear the phrase — that's just how you are. While it may not feel particularly comforting, it most commonly means a genetic predisposition — greater sensitivity of the hair follicles to androgens. This is not a diagnosis to be ashamed of — it is information that can be worked with.

Laser hair removal in hormonal areas is effective and produces very significant improvement. It removes hair that has often been a source of concern for many years and allows a lasting reduction to be achieved. Any hair that appears later is usually a matter of individual cases, not a return of the problem.

The key is proper assessment, an understanding of the mechanism, and an individual approach — exactly as in any considered skin therapy.
